I would not stay at this hotel again. i had booked 3 nights and wound up only staying 2. upon arrival the full payment was due in cash which we did not expect. i had reserved 2 beachfront bungalows and what we got were 2 rooms on the beach, not the free standing huts i had promised my visitors. the view from our porch was beautiful and the beach very peaceful but the water was not conducive to swimming. my sister had swarms of ants in her room after returning from a walk on the beach. we began moving furniture to see where they were coming from only to discover underneath all the furniture we filthy. the staff was very friendly and helpful and we were always greeting with smiles. we decided to leave a day early as none of us had gotten any sleep between the super uncomfortable beds, AC blowing right on our faces and the thoughts of thousands of ants crawling around. upon our check out, the managers weren t around so we weren t able to get a refund on our final night, which we didn t care about by this point, we just wanted out of there. all around this hotel are backpacking spots, so if that s what you re looking for i d say this place is right up your alley. we were looking for a little more pampering and did find it at a place down the beach.
great! very quick response.

Could I speak more highly of this place? I doubt it. Helmut and his wife and the whole staff were great, the bungalows were clean and well-equipped, and the ambiance was splendid. I spent a few weeks with the beach outside of my window - a great way to start the day (or the afternoon, since you can spend your evenings in nearby Lamai or a-bit-further-away Chaweng if you so desire). Aree Resort was clean, quiet, and filled with travelers from other countries. The travelers seemed to be family-types and older than your standard lager-happy merrymakers, so the mood was mellow. I would highly recommend this place and will stay there again next time I am fortunate enough to be in Samui.
Yeah, it was all good.

Wonderful place. Very peaceful, friendly and just nice. Walking distance from the city; right on the seashore. The staff was very helpful and the manager was personally making sure we enjoyed the stay. The only negative thing was the sea. Stones and coral reefs, impossible to get in without shoes, but we bought the shoes in the city (sold virtually everywhere 200bt or so) and enjoyed snorkling after that. Overall, i recommend this place to everybody.
fast, efficient. no problems at all

What a great resort, clean, quiet, very friendly, free safety deposit, and right on the beach which was perfect. It was a birthday treat for my husband and the owner even arrange Flowers and Beer for our arrival. Perfect location with some really cheap Food stalls and only 10 mins from Lamai Central. Would definately stay there again and already recommending to friends, thanks to Helmut and staff for making our stay perfect.
Extremly efficient will definately use again for our next stay in Thailand.

THE GOOD: The owner is a cordial older gentleman who is very helpful. The staff there is the best thing about the place. They are some great and wonderful ladies. They kept my bungalow spotless and in top condition. My a/c acted up and the owner had it fixed immediately. I found the breakfast to be fine, counter to what someone said; after all, what do you expect for $3? For $3 it could not be beat. Delivered to your room by a beautiful smiling lady. Their fruit plate is very good too. There is a tidal pool inlet right there on the beach that makes for a very nice natural jaccuzi when the tide is going out. THE BAD: The owner demanded cash for the balance upon check-in. He said it is noted on the web-site. I can t find that, can you? My bungalow was NOT what I would consider a bungalow, but just a room on the beach. Maybe Thailand had different ideals about what a bungalow is. I consider it a stand-alone type hut myself. The beds had the straw-matte on concrete quality, even when two mattresses were stacked. To be fair, that is a common complaint with many Thai resorts. The beach is NOT quite AT ALL in the evenings. Some idiot resort down the way is always shooting off a LOUD cannon all through the night, for what reason, I don t know. On 3 occasions we had drunken young Thai men walking up and down the beach having a rolling party and shooting off LARGE fireworks and being asses. Coming from a war zone, the LAST thing I wanted to hear was abrupt BANGS and BOOMS all through the night. The resort has 3 large dogs that are docile towards people, but try to gang up on and start a dog-fight with about every dog that comes down the beach, even with the passing dogs on leashs with their owners trying to protect them. There are many very loud speaker trucks running down the road blaring advertisments too. Quite annoying. I also was not informed a swimming pool was available. Listen folks, nothing to do with Aree Resort specifically, but Koh Samui is NOT a quite island paradise if that is what you desire; it is closer to Bangkok on a beach. It is loud, very commercial, and the traffic is very heavy and extremely dangerous. If you want what most Westerners consider a quite island getaway, I would suggest nearby islands Koh Phangan or Koh Tao which I found on a day trip to be very pleasent, laid back, and quite. But, I am sure there are quiter spots on Samui, especially on the SW coast. I dove all around the whole island. One exquisite spot I found to sit and eat and watch the sun go down is the Laem Set Inn open-air restaurant on the SW coast. Great spot and great food. Not a place for loud-mouth idiots. Folks there are very quite and respectful. How nice to find such a place so unlike so many other spots. I spent a couple of the most wonderful hours of my life there with a beautiful young creature who would not let me lift a fork. I LOVE Thai women. What a refreshing change over Lamai Beach this place was. I can also recommend Mango Village Resort. I had a friend staying there and THAT is one BEAUTIFUL and quite place with a very nice secluded beach. But, next time for me, it is Koa Tao island. Thank you Thailand, I love ya Baby! (even with the not-so-good tossed in).
Maybe they could had pointed out the credit cards you use there will not work at the Aree? Otherwise, good.

We stayed for 5 nights in a beachfront-AC-room. The room-size was o.k., the bathroom a little bit small. The room was cleaned every day, one pillow was pretty dirty under the sheet, but i have seen it the last day... Maybe they would have changed it if i would have asked before. The location was fine - close enough to Lamai-Center to reach the restaurants in some minutes, a 7-11 is not far away - but it is far enough from the noise of the bars at night. The beach and the water was during our stay a little bit dirty... For Lamai the Aree has a good value, but i am not sure if i will come back again...
Perfect!

Good value for money. However after booking out after 3week period to be informed that no credit card payments are accepted is poor form.Deposit etc paid by credit card. Website should advise that business is cash only. Very inconvienent.
No mention made that cash only way to settle bill.

Very happy with my stay at Aree Resort! The beachfront studio more than met my expectations - nicely decorated and thoroughly cleaned every day. Good patio area in front of the room with table/chairs and sunlounger. Beach a bit skinny at this point but just wander a bit further up and problem solved. There was much more depth to the water than on previous visits so swimming better, although water quite murky. Will definitely stay at Aree again!
Great end-to-end service as usual, Sawadee rock!! Will continue to use and recommend to friends.

Small resort located at north end of Lamai beach. The garden view room they gave us was small, dark, and stank of cigarette smoke. The bed was very old and kind of dipped in the middle. The resort is also located a ways north of the town area, so not really convenient for dining or drinking either. There are better places to stay for just a few more baht. Didn t even stay for one night (even though I had paid in advance).
