Sansuien garden is a historic place where Saigo Takamori came to Takayama as an envoy of the Satsuma clan to hold a four-lord conference to plan the seizure of power from Tokugawa Yoshinobu at the end of the Edo period, and had an audience with the Tosa clan lord, Yamauchi Uchidō, at Monomi-tei. The grounds are filled with historical buildings that convey the atmosphere of the end of the Edo period, such as the main gate that welcomes guests and the former Yamauchi family lower residence tenement house, an important cultural property.
