Plai Laem Beach is another of Samui's little known beaches. It is also one with little development of any kind, and few beachfront accommodations. The location on the west of Samui's northeast peninsula makes it convenient to the airport and to the entertainment centres of Chaweng and Bophut, plus the major shopping centres on this corner of Samui.
At the same time, the beach itself is very peaceful and quiet, making it another of those places where one can enjoy a quiet base to retreat to each evening, while being within easy driving distance of the many Samui lifestyle offerings in this part of the island.
Sunsets are particularly good from this beach, since it faces directly west and the sun generally falls over both water and the distant corner of Samui. The bars in the resorts here are thus popular places to end the day.
Without transport the visitor is in for an exceptionally quiet time, or long walks to the Big Buddha and Bangrak beach areas where there are many restaurants and beach bars. It is about one kilometre from the current accommodations on Plai Laem to Big Buddha, with the walk along the beach and road taking about 15 minutes.
The area behind this beach is a residential area for Thais employed in resorts and the tourism industry. The Thai community here is growing quite quickly, with some small shops, minimarts and a few noodle restaurants within walking distance of the beach.
Taxis are cheap. Although cheaper still are the Songteaws - a vehicle with two long benches in the back. You stop them anywhere along the road, hop in the back, then press the buzzer when you want to get off. These are all along the main roads, and tourists areas, and tourists jump on and off wherever they want. There are no set times. Classified as the Thai local style bus.
Many people prefer to rent mopeds or scooters as these are also very cheap. As is car hire.
