History of the district:
Certain houses dating from the Middle Ages certainly make the Quai des Tanneurs one of the oldest districts in the city. These are characteristic of the profession of tanner. The stream, which occupied the central part of the street and was used for tanning skins, was filled in at the beginning of the 20th century for health reasons.

It is in this canal which crossed the tanners' quarter that the curlers washed their skins before tanning. In 1851, the moat was channeled by two stone walls which thus created two quays on either side, joined by several footbridges.

The Gerberbach is the terminal segment of the Châtenois canal (also called Stadtbach) before it empties into the Ill. In its crossing of the city its name varied: Schlangbach, Predigerbach and finally Gerberbach which means ditch of the tanners. Today you notice that the canal is no longer visible. It was indeed covered in 1912, in particular to bring more sanitation to the district.
Characteristic tanner houses

The tanner practiced his trade in his house. It is therefore entirely characteristic of the needs related to the profession. Evidenced by the narrow high gable and the sloping roof, typical of tanner houses. In fact, before being transformed into leather, the skins were washed, scraped and tanned several times in baths. The top floor was therefore deliberately high enough and has an opening to be able to hang the skins and dry them.
