The Schaalsee biosphere reserve is located directly on the former inner-German border. A circular hike across the Strangen peninsula and around the Kirchensee impressively shows how formerly populated areas and border installations were and are being recaptured by nature. The slightly more than 40 km long bike tour around the Schaalsee is also very nice.
