Dovetail Directory - A Free Catalogue of World Birding Tours
Doi Chiang Dao is close to the Burmese border and is only accessible
by four-wheel drive. It is worth the effort however, as both Hume's
Pheasant and Giant Nuthatch are possible here and the scenery
is stunning with massive pinnacles of mountains rising from the
cultivated plains. Other new species may include Blue-throated
Barbet, Large Hawk-cuckoo, Crested Treeswift, Grey Treepie, Slender-billed
Oriole, Little, Pied and Sapphire Flycatchers, White-bellied Redstart,
Grey-breasted Prinia, Japanese White-eye, Aberrant Bush-warbler,
Lesser Necklaced Laughingthrush and Crested and Little Buntings.

Even the "familiar" is different here:
a magpie that is green, woodpeckers with punk hairdos, and kingfishers
with bright colors. To the north along the border with Myanmar lie
the mountain massifs of Doi Inthanon, Doi Chiang Dao, and Doi Ang
Khang, where the resident birds comprise a list of montane Asian
exotica, with names like minivet, leafbird, parrotbill, fulvetta,
spiderhunter, mesia, minla, yuhina, iora, sibia, tesia, barwing,
and niltava |

Bird Tours - Birding Tour of Thailand
DOI CHIANG DAO (20 January), by contrast, remains
one of the best-wooded mountains in northern Thailand, thanks to
its precipitous nature. A solid block of limestone, it rises sheer
almost 2,100 m. (7,000 ft.) from the plains. .. there is a good
chance of finding the elusive and much sought after Giant Nuthatch,
besides a great many other birds, including .... There is always
an outside chance of finding Hume's Pheasant--there are now several
sightings annually of this species which was once feared extirpated
in Thailand. |

Day 14: We'll leave early for the Mae Taeng Irrigation
Project, part way to Chiang Dao District. The open country, where
a shingle river descends from the steep mountains to the west, always
produces a fine variety of birds including Wire-tailed Swallow,
Chestnut-capped Babbler, Chestnut-tailed Starling, Crested Bunting,
and Red Avadavat. Siberian Rubythroat is common here and we'll hope
for excellent views of this living jewel. We'll also look for Baikal
(Spotted) Bush Warbler among other species.
